Recreational Marijuana in Canada could be coming very soon with the election of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The new Prime Minister had vowed to make recreational marijuana in Canada legal once elected. Trudeau has stated that the current marijuana laws have trapped too many Canadians with criminal records for minor, non-violent offenses, as well as cost their government too much money in law enforcement attempting to enforce those laws. Instead Trudeau wants to create new laws, that would punish those who provide it to minors, those who operate any motor vehicles while under the influence, and those who sell it outside of the new regulations that will be implemented.

The Prime Minister was quoted as saying “we will create a federal, provincial, territorial task force, and with input from experts in public health, substance abuse, and law enforcement, will design a new system of strict marijuana sales and distribution, with appropriate federal and provincial excise taxes applied.” Trudeau believes that once the plan for recreational marijuana in Canada is up and running it will give the Canadian government a way to keep marijuana out of the hands of children, and enable a way to regulate and restrict access to it. Trudeau wants the system of legalized marijuana in Canada to be modeled after Colorado’s marijuana rules and regulations in the United States.

“we will create a federal, provincial, territorial task force, and with input from experts in public health, substance abuse, and law enforcement, will design a new system of strict marijuana sales and distribution, with appropriate federal and provincial excise taxes applied.”

With the election of Prime Minister Trudeau, marijuana stocks have begun to rise for medical marijuana companies. Officials believe stocks will continue to rise as the industry is expecting a large number of new businesses to begin the process of opening up retail stores in Canada as soon as it is possible.
