When the city of Coalinga approved the sale of the Claremont Custody Center to Ocean Grown Extracts, little did the Council know one of the most famous names in cannabis culture would soon be associated with the cultivation. That name? Marley.
Damian Marley, Bob Marley’s youngest son, in partnership with Ocean Grown Extracts, is converting the center into a medical marijuana grow for California dispensaries.
Damian Marley said, “Many people sacrificed so much for the herb over the years who got locked up. If this helps people and it’s used for medicinal purposes and inspires people, it’s a success.”
Earlier this year the Coalinga City Council approved the sale of the 77,000-square-foot facility for $4.1 million. Coalinga City Manager Marissa Trejo said the sale put the city into the black. The city had between $3.3 million and $3.8 million in debt. The sale erased that debt. Coalinga also expects to collect “around $2 million per year in rent and fees” from the MMJ extraction facility
Ocean Grown Extracts co-owner Casey Dalton said, “We’re thrilled to be able to offer 100 jobs and make safe medicine available for patients. We appreciate Coalinga taking a chance not only on us, but on the industry.”
Mayor Pro Tem Patrick Keough said, “We listened to the citizens and created a package that was reflective of our population. You can never do anything that satisfies everyone. But we were pretty darn close to doing that.”
Mayor Ron Ramsey said, “We need some kind of revenue, we’re hurting right now. I don’t want to wait until November and all these other cities jump into it too. There’s a lot of cities hurting right now.”
Marley’s manager Dan Dalton said “Cannabis is something that’s around Damian every day with friends, family and with his Rastafarian faith. We’ve watched people who have sacrificed their lives for it. That injustice has motivated us to be advocates as well as knowing that there are healing properties in cannabis.”
Damian Marley also introduced Speak Life, a strain of cannabis he created with Ocean Grown. The strain is based on the company’s OG Kush. It is a 70 percent indica/30 percent sativa hybrid.
He said, “The OG has always been my favorite. When they introduced this strain of OG I really loved it and loved its consistency.”
